When a Native American wanderer crosses their path, the emigrants are torn between their trust in a guide who has proven himself unreliable and a man who has always been seen as a natural born enemy.The guide is called Stephen Meek (Bruce Greenwood). He claims that he is well acquainted with the whole path and claims to know the shortcut route that would lead the three families to their respective destinations. We discover Meek leading the group on an unmarked path across the high plain desert, only to become lost in dry rock and sage. Over the coming days, the emigrants face the scourges of hunger, thirst and their own lack of faith in one another's instincts for survival.

In Meeks Cutoff we have such one case. In 1845, three families hired the services of Stephen Meek, a fur trapper and explorer who made his living as a wagon train guide. At the time there were circulating rumors that those living in the Blue Mountain, a village along the Oregon Trail, might possibly be attacked by the Wala Wala and Cayuse Indians, but Meek assured them that he knew an alternate route around the Blue Mountain and so they followed him. And that's when their trouble began.
